Outreach Mission Statements

Support the psychological and developmental well-being of all Penn students through facilitating self-awareness, self-care, intentionality, enhanced inter-connectedness and sense of community. CAPS’ Outreach and Prevention Services seeks to implement this vision through developing effective collaborative programs that aid personal development, proactively reach underserved populations and promote a positive campus climate. Outreach is the process of extending the caring and expertise of CAPS to the broader Duke University community in service of the overall goals of CAPS endeavors in clinical, developmental, consultative, and social justice domains, all situated within the mission of the Division of Student Affairs.

Our website has a slightly different wording, including some messages inherent in the statement:

CAPS Outreach Services aim to extend the caring wisdom and expertise of the traditional counseling session into the campus community.   Recognizing that the challenges facing students are often linked to the environment in which they live and learn, we devote a great deal of resources on trying to make the Duke University community a more therapeutic place, including challenging some of the unhealthy or harmful norms that often emerge in society.  (Duke University)

Outreach Services are an integral part of the activities conducted at the University Counseling Center (UCC). The UCC Outreach Services aim to serve the campus community as a whole by extending our clinical and educational services beyond the walls of the UCC. Outreach Services allow the provision of deliberate, systematic, and creative psycho-educational programming; with a multicultural and developmental perspective on prevention, wellness, and student self-help. Such efforts allow us to work collaboratively with staff and departments across campus to ensure student engagement and success. (Texas A&M Corpus Christi)

In support of the overall mission of the UCTC and the Division of Student Affairs, the UCTC strives to meet the needs of our diverse campus community by extending our services and support through our outreach efforts. With a value towards personal and community wellness, our outreach program at the UCTC is committed to the creation of a campus climate that enhances the academic, personal, and interpersonal growth of each of our UO students.

Through outreach, consultation, prevention and educational programming, the UCTC aims to increase awareness and effectively address the developmental concerns relevant to the lives of our college students. Outreach at the UCTC is devoted to increasing students’ access and awareness of the services we provide. As we recognize our students have unique concerns and come from diverse backgrounds, the UCTC is also strongly dedicated to reaching out to all students and especially those from underrepresented identities, marginalized communities, and students who are at higher risk of facing barriers to their academic and personal success. In collaboration with other UO campus programs, offices, and academic departments, it is our hope that students feel empowered to express their needs and connect with the support needed for self-growth and positive change. As the UCTC and UO student affairs strive to provide students with the skills and resources to facilitate their optimal level of functioning, our UCTC outreach efforts aspire to create a community of care for our UO students with the ultimate goal of creating a collective positive and meaningful college experience.  (University of Oregon)

Outreach is about increasing college student mental health awareness through prevention, awareness, education and stigma reduction. Through outreach, CAPS staff are able to connect with the larger UM community and ultimately strengthen our “community of caring.”

Who do we reach through outreach?

We are essentially connecting with students who do not traditionally utilize individual or group therapy. These could include students who may want to know more about how to help a friend or students who may experience stigma about help seeking or students who may need support, but not necessarily counseling. CAPS creates a “web of support” not only for students, but also encourages staff and faculty involvement through a variety of education and prevention efforts.  (University of Michigan)

The Student Counseling Center offers a variety of outreach services to the University community with the goal of creating and maintaining a healthy, psychologically-minded student population. Our programming is geared towards primary prevention of mental illness, enhancement of academic success, and personal and social empowerment through awareness and knowledge. The center also works to integrate multicultural and developmental perspectives into our programming to be more inclusive and relevant to all students.

As an extension of our clinical services, outreach programming expands the impact of the Student Counseling Center beyond counseling into the everyday lives of all students. By reaching out to large amounts of students in short amounts of time, and promoting knowledge and awareness to students who might otherwise not present in counseling, we help to ensure our mission of providing psychological services to as many students as possible.
